Sinclair Ferguson brings a depth to the preaching of the Word from his study of the great Puritan preacher John Owen. We have heard him preach on several occasions and his staid and dignified approach to the texts of God are solid like that of our Rock Jesus Christ. I am grateful for his handling of Owen’s work and his volume on The Glory of Christ which was John Owen’s last and crowning work of his life on earth before he was ushered into glory to meet his Saviour face to face inspires you with the glory of our blessed Redeemer King. As Sinclair Ferguson said, “A great and beautiful book…his final testimony to the grace of God in the Gospel.”
It is his last view of Christ from the twilight of his life and an exhortation it is. Owen writes,
“But no man can die cheerfully or comfortably who lives not in a constant resignation of the time and season of his death to the will of God, as well as himself with respect to death itself. Our times are in his hand, at his sovereign disposal; and his will in all things must be complied with. Without this resolution, without this resignation, no man can enjoy the keast solid peace in this world.”
It is a volume which you read with your Word and heart open to a deeper relationship with the Sovereign King for whom we owe our absolute and total allegiance and service. It is a volume which occupies a place reserved for the few books that circulate out of our bookshelves. It is a volume to be meditated upon and prayed through drawing one closer to His Word and the Word made flesh.
