Hanukkah in the New Testament | Chosen People Ministries

Hanukkah is in the Old Testament, right?

Actually, the only time Hanukkah is mentioned in the Bible is in the New Testament. Since Hanukkah took place after the Old Testament was canonized, it is not included therein. The story of Hanukkah takes place in 166-160 BC when the land of Israel was under Greek rule for over 150 years since Alexander the Great took over in 333 BC. Since then, many Jewish people had adopted the Greek culture and ways. However, Antiochus Epiphanes, the current ruler, forbade Jewish festivals and Temple worship and wanted the Jewish people to be fully absorbed into the Greek culture. Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks and the rededication of the Temple.

So that brings us to the Bible, where is it if it happened after the Old Testament and before the New Testament?

This “festival of lights” is first mentioned in John 10:22

. In this passage, Jesus goes to the Jerusalem Temple to celebrate the Feast of Dedication. Jesus celebrated Hanukkah!

John 10 takes place in the Temple courts, while Jesus observes the feast of Hanukkah. His teaching gathered the Jewish people around him and with great anticipation, they asked Him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” (John 10:24

Interestingly enough, the literal Greek translation reads: “How long will you lift up our souls?” The Jewish people at that time lifted up their souls in hopeful, anxious anticipation for the fulfillment of Messianic prophecies! Today, believers all around the world lift up their hearts and souls to Jesus as we longingly anticipate the day when Jewish people around the world embrace Jesus their Messiah.

We can also marvel at the fact that Jesus, whose birth we celebrate at Christmas, actually celebrated Hanukkah, the Feast of Dedication. This is truly poignant considering that this means Jesus celebrated the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple, which essentially was a grassroots Jewish movement to preserve Jerusalem and the Jewish people from absorbing into the pagan, Hellenistic culture of their time. If the Maccabees had not reclaimed and rededicated the Jewish Temple, Jesus would not have been able to come to a Jewish Temple or a Jewish people!

So in essence, when we celebrate Hanukkah, we also celebrate the divinity of Jesus. During a holiday that celebrates the miracle of light, we celebrate the fact that Jesus came and brings light to the world and to our souls!

Josephus Maccabees war Against Antiochus and Hannukah

Let’s take a look at Josephus’ history of the Maccabees war against the Antiochus, the Greek ruler who defiled the Temple with the sacrifice of pigs on the altar. We know that our Lord Jesus Christ came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill the Law. It is also true that no one else has or can perfectly fulfill the law, but Him. To do so there had to be a Temple to fulfill that Law. “And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought Him up to Jerusalem, to present Him to the LORD (as is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb, shall be called holy to the LORD) and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the LORD, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Luke 2:22-25a

[If you’ve ever wondered where the two turtledoves came from in the song, “On the First day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pair tree (Him, because that bird is willing to sacrifice its life if necessary to protect its young by feigning injury to draw away predators), on the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me two turtle doves-then Old and New Testament– although I’d say it represents the required sacrifice for a firstborn child; three French hens stood for faith, hope and love; the four calling birds- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; five golden rings- The first five books of the Old Testament-the Torah; six geese a laying- Six days of creation; seven swans a swimming-Sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit-prophecy, serving, teaching, exhortation, contribution, leadership and mercy; eight maids a milking are the Eight Beatitudes; nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit-charity, joy, peace, patience, forbearance, goodness, kindness, mildness, fidelity, modesty, continency, and chastity; 10 lords a leaping-10 commandments; 11 pipers piping, the eleven faithful apostles, 12 drummers drming symbolizes the twelve points of belief in the Apostles creed).

Luke 2:25b-38

“And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death, before he saw the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit to the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning Him after the custim.of the law, then he received Him into his arms, and blessed God and said,

“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,

According to Your word;

For my eyes have seen Your salvation

Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,

A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,

And the glory of Your people Israel.”

And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna Bears Witness to the Redeemer

Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”

The Story of the Maccabees

I am working on little booklet telling the Christmas story from a Jewish- Christian Scriptural Perspective and including the Feast of Lights, aka Hannukah, spoken of in the Gospel of John. I thought you might find this extra Biblical historical reading of interest to gain an understanding of the meaning of Hannukah beyond it being thought of as the Jewish Christmas, or receiving eight days of presents and eating potato pancakes. It is a rich and dramatic history of the zeal of the Jewish true believers for God, His purposes, plans and His Word.

Often in recent years I have thought that without Hannukah, Christmas would not be possible. For Yeshua Ha’moshiach, our LORD Jesus Christ to fulfill the Law perfectly, which He did, He had to be presented at the Temple so that He could be dedicated, be circumcised on the eighth day, and also so Simeon and Anna could bless Him who were awaiting the Messiah. The Maccabees had won back the Temple from the Greeks who had thoroughly defiled God’s holy sanctuary and reconsecreated it. The story is a wonderful knitting together of the whole Biblical context of His incarnation.
May you be blessed this Hannukah and Christmas season by His Presence and with many opportunities to share the truth of the King of kings, our Messiah Yeshua Ha’moshiach, our LORD Jesus Christ, King of kings, the Lamb of God who came to take away the sins of the world.
Joy to the World!! Through the One and only source of Joy, Immanuel.
Praying you have much love and joy this holy season,

Here is an excellent reading of the Book of Maccabees. There are three parts.

Here’s a link to my Hannukah playlist. Hope it works if you’re interested.

“Tatian and the Diatessaron”

Exploring God’s Library

The Diatessaron, known as the first harmony of the four Gospels was composed in Aramaic by Tatian, a disciple of Justin the Martyr an early church Father in about 160 A.D.

This effort by Tatian aimed to compile a seamless history of the four Gospels as one narrative piece on the Life of Christ as revealed in Holy Writ. Why? Simply because each of the four eyewitnesses provides a more complete picture of the life and times of Jesus Christ our King. That does not mean that each of the four Gospel narratives can not stand alone on its own merit. Quite the opposite. Each was written with a particular audience in mind, e.g., Matthew was written to a Jewish audience and Mark to a Greek audience. The Gospel of John surprisingly appeals to Japanese scientists.

Again, why the need? Simply that each of the four Gospels are not all arranged in the same order. Mark is not in chronological order, whereas Luke tells the story chronologically. And yet each Gospel often sheds light on the same event as this band of disciples traveled with him, albeit from a differing viewpoint. As in life, not everyone attended all the events, so the Synoptic Gospels, a term for “To see together” provides a Harmony of the parts, and brings together one large tapestry of the Life of Christ, His birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension.

97% of the words of Mark are in Matthew although from a different perspective. 88% of the words in Mark are found in Luke written by the physician Luke. The Gospel of John provides an independent witness and reveals a high Christological view of Christ. John the beloved was an ancient storyteller with an intimate knowledge of the synoptics and was part of Christ’s inner circle.

The following excellent presentation on the Diatessaron complete with a timeline and short bio of Tatian was designed by the group as seen in the source below.
